Time with Glass

First launched by director Robert Wilson and composer Philip Glass at the Metropolitan Opera in 1976, Einstein on the Beach has been recently reconstructed and is touring internationally. Considered an opera, but breaking all the rules, Glass’ arrangements are for┬ásynthesisers, woodwinds and voices of the Philip Glass Ensemble. It is non-narrative in form, using recurrent images (clocks being one) juxtaposed with abstract dance sections created by American choreographer Lucinda Childs. A performance and installation more than an ‘opera,’ its sound, visuals, and movements combine to force a change in perception of time.
