Playground Explorations

The modern urban playground was born at the turn of the 20th century, when improvements in child labor laws gave children more time to play, and they needed somewhere other than the city streets to do it. Hara Estroff Marano believes “Play is the future with sneakers on”; but some of today’s playgrounds lack the imagination they are meant to inspire. Thankfully, this is beginning to change due to playful design innovations which take into account a child’s innate design to explore and have control over their environment. These exciting spaces are worldwide and include New York’s Adventure Playground and Teardrop Park which integrates playful elements into a sophisticated landscape meant to invoke the Catskills.
