Bowie at V&A

We recently wrote about the Design Museum London’s great line-up for 2013. The V&A is not to be overlooked though, especially with its upcoming spring retrospective on rock icon David Bowie, running from March 23-July 28. The “musical innovator and cultural icon’s” lyrics, costumes, instruments and album artwork will all be on display. New York Mag has a little preview of some of the best items included, for those who can’t wait. Bowie’s newest album, “The Next Day,” will also be released in March, and is already topping the charts on iTunes in 17 countries.

Floating Fabric

Japanese artist Rie Hosokai, of Daisy Balloon, creates intricately woven dresses, from inflated latex balloons. She deftly twists and ties small inflated balloons together, effectively “knitting” a fragile, but flexible and wearable material. She is now showing some of her work as part of a charity exhibition in Tokyo – “Piece for Peace,” through January 9th.

Full of Fibers

Those in NYC till the end of the year still have a chance to warm up to some wool at a Benetton pop-up that’s taken over a 2,200-square-foot garage at Broadway and Lafayette. The space is a color-coded explosion of fibers, created by designers at Benetton’s Fabrica – the brand’s residency program in Treviso, Italy. With a concept “to adapt Benetton’s DNA to a more modern vision,” the space is overflowing with interesting and odd uses of textiles, all wonderfully woven in with the brand’s clothing line.

Stamp Collecting

For her SS13 collection, fashion designer Mary Katrantzou looked to an unlikely everyday object for inspiration: postage stamps. Her elegant, floaty, colorful prints mimic and build upon the intricate beauty of international stamps. The playful results make us want to travel everywhere in them.

App of Fashion

Fashion brands are venturing further into the world of the iPad to show off their collections. Prada’s Il Palazzo is a new app that takes viewers into a virtual palace, where they can explore the austere and elegant surroundings, viewing drawn illustrations of the F/W 2012 Menswear line. Illustrator and former fashion designer Richard Haines collaborated with Prada to create the “artwork” on the walls of the palace. Haines is known for his lovely sketches on his street-seen style blog What I Saw Today.

Fantastical Worlds

Tim Walker creates daring, bold, and deeply gorgeous photographs, all with an edgy sense of humor. His work – along with several of the giant, fantastical props he commissions for them – is currently showing in London. Models get stomped by giant baby dolls, ride in airplanes made of bread, and prance through fairytale settings. On view at Somerset House through January 27.

Clutch and Carry

For those fashionable people who can’t leave home without their tunes, designer Rebecca Minkoff  debuted the Audio Clutch during the recent NYFW.  Closed, the accessory looks like a lovely little clutch bag. But open, it reveals a bluetooth-enabled hi-fi audio system.

All Dressed Up

Happy Halloween! If you’re in London, check out the V&A’s “Hollywood Costume” exhibition, which explores the central role costume design plays in cinema and story-telling. The show features 100+ famed movie characters and offers the background of the costume designer’s creative process. On view through January 27.

M/M Monograph

M/M Paris have consistently defied categorization and boundaries in their work for fashion, art, music, and exhibitions. A stunning monograph of their work is being published, highlighting their projects with Bjork, Stella McCartney, the Tate Modern, and more.

Why don’t you….

Diana Vreeland helped define the fashion world as we know it today – merging art, music and celebrity culture with a stunning editorial eye that became iconic. New film “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel” celebrates the endlessly quotable editor’s influence from her childhood to her career at Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and The Costume Institute at the MET.
