Manly Wares

For design-minded guys feeling underserved by current offerings for the home – designer Jonah Takagi started Field as a new housewares collection. Taking inspiration from the worlds of tools and workshops, the first line of offerings includes soapstone bookends and a reclaimed pine pen holder. All are made in the US by small-batch craftsmen and factories.

Retro-Future Prada

OMA – Rem Koolhaas’ architectural firm – has ventured beyond physical collaboration to help introduce Prada’s retro-futuristic new 2012 line. A film and scenography depicts “a dystopian society of machines and jagged geometries…” according to the designers. Models walk through collaged sci-fi sets, to the tune of machine-made bleeps and bops.

The Nose Knows

If you’ve always wanted to create your own unique perfume, the Museum of Arts and Design is hosting workshops this fall on the topic of “Olfactory Engineering.” The “Workshops in Scent” include sessions with master perfumer Yves Cassar on natural essence in perfume, and “Create Your own Essence” with Carlos Bennaim.

Better with Age

The women posing for fashion blog Advanced Style exude glamour, joy, and a unique confidence. Each is over 60, photographed by Ari Seth Cohen after he became inspired by his own grandmother’s interesting and enduring style. Cohen published a book of his wonderful photographs and accompanying stories in May, and his blog remains a great place to visit for some perspective and inspiration.

Vibrant Viewing

Kenzo’s pre-fall 2012 video recalls the early days of MTV promos, with its roughly cut, collaged animations and bright neon highlights. Director Quentin Jones shows a model against industrial backdrops, with hula-hoops, boxing gloves, and monkey bars, spelling out Kenzo with vibrant, sketched and spliced-in letters.

Image Dynamics

Swiss-Guinean photographer Namsa Leuba creates wonderfully rich photographs addressing fashion, Guinean culture and identity. For this series in WAD Magazine she combines traditional Guinean elements with components of Western dress and perceptions, in strong, dynamic and colorful compositions.

Patterns of Givenchy

At the beginning of the summer months, we dedicated our blog to a week of pattern. This week,  Givenchy’s resort collection was released; textiles saturated with pattern and texture, where seemingly-conflicting intricate paisley prints and bold geometric shapes are combined to incredible effect. The collection was captured by renowned photographer Angelo Pennetta on the streets of New York, where the excitement and diversity of the city was embraced – with dogs, passing cars and cyclists all featured in the background.

Digital Textiles

Casey Reas, who designed wertco.com 1.0 (circa 1998), spoke at the recent Eyeo festival about chance in art and code, engrossing audience members as he referenced artists Duchamp, Mondrian and Tinguely, among others. In 2007, he and his fashion designer wife Cait Reas combined their knowledge of interactive technology and fashion to create the Tissue Collection, a range of one-of-a-kind garments with complex digitally-created textile designs.

In the Trunk

In a time when our fashion accessories tend to be designed for technology (with perfectly-sized smartphone pockets and cord-tie attachments), its refreshing to see a company going back to basics, with a twist. Australian-based Trunk & Orderly hand-make classic fiberboard suitcases, to order.  Customers can choose the exterior color, and some fun interior fabrics, blanketing their suitcase in blades of grass. And check out a great profile on their workshop here.

Aging Gracefully

Japanese design firm Torafu Architects have developed a wedding ring that changes over time. The piece gradually transforms as the thin exterior coat of silver plating rubs away to reveal a gold band underneath, becoming a poignant physical embodiment of the time the couple have spent together.
